As someone who loves both award shows and fancy dress, it rocks my socks when the two are combined together so by progression that means I love Lady Gaga. However last week the Americans decided to hold their version of the Brits, where it seemed that the current queen of pop was entirely upstaged by her hip hop counterpart Nicki Minaj.
Traditionally if someone were to say to you pop star fancy dress your mind might go to Madonna, Tina Turner, Adam Ant or any of a long list of other crazily dressed 80s icon, this is because the 1980s was blessed with more than its fair share of fashion statements, neon colourful clothes and a whole load of bonkers outfits that thankfully again we are now able to wear under the excuse of 80s fancy dress.
Unfortunately though, this almost completely tailed off during the 90s and then plummeted during the naughties, as pop stars started to dress ‘nicely’. So with the exception of a few celebrities (*cough* Spice Girls *cough*) we were left with no outlandishly dressed pop stars as outfits to mimic in the guise of fancy dress. Until finally, in 2008 Lady Gaga came along, as a saving grace, with a perpetual mission to push the boat with more and more ridiculous outfits some of which simply have to come under the umbrella of fancy dress. For years she always had the crown for the wackiest outfit until last week…
Not only did Nicki Minaj turn up in a giant red dress (awesome!), she turned up with a guy dressed as the pope… and then she proceeded to put on the most bizarre performance I’ve ever seen, involving demons and exorcisms and a dancing bishop, what was Lady Gaga wearing whilst this was going on? I can’t remember.
Pop star and celebrity fancy dress is all about people instantly recognising who you are, what’s the point of dressing as your favourite personality if nobody knows that you’re in fancy dress. So whilst we’ve been starved for 2 decades for such recognisable celebrities wanting to make that statement, now we have 2 awesome ones. They’ve come round just like buses, weirdly dressed, ridiculous, colourful buses.
So if your hunting for a celebrity outfit, one that everyone will instantly recognise and love, whilst I would always encourage people to for something 80s (clearly the best decade), if you’re looking for something slightly more modern then definitely try Minaj or go Gaga.
