The hardest part of putting together any fancy dress costume is initially coming up with that great idea, these days with so many great sites packed with amazing costumes (*cough* Universal Fancy Dress *cough*), once you know what you’re going as the rest is reasonably simple. So, because deciding on that outfit is so much harder than it looks and as a random act of helpfulness, I’m going to talk about a couple of my favourite 60s fancy dress costumes.
Hippie chick costumes
Everyone knows that the 1960s was all about free love, drugs, not washing and everything else that your parents frown on but so blatantly did. Nothing represents this more than a bit of good old fashioned flower power. A good hippy costume is simple, very effective and requires a selection of the following: round colourful specs, a peace sign medallion, earrings or any other pacifistic jewellery, headbands, a tambourine, all the tie dye and of course a whole lot of floral. When going for the hippie fancy dress look the most important thing to remember is if you don’t look like a rainbow exploded over you, you’re doing it wrong…
Sexy Star Trek outfits
If you’re thinking that maybe hippies are a bit too much of the obvious choice then you may have to look towards 1960s pop culture – a gold mine of wicked fancy dress. Nothing says the 60s more than William Shatner boldly going where limited television budgets and technology will let him. Star Trek defined a generation and those yellow, blue and red spandex uniforms are not only iconic but very sexy – no man can resist a girl in a Star Trek uniform (especially if you throw in some Spock ears!)
Catwoman – Eartha Kitt style
Following in the vein of ridiculous 1960s TV shows and the accompanying fancy dress; the Batman series starring Adam West just has to rise to the top. Way more camp than Batman should ever be, it does introduce Catwoman which makes it a great costume for a 60s party – all you need is a black cat suit and a whole host of kitty puns. Throughout the 3 seasons and a movie there were even 3 different ladies playing Catwoman (trivia!) so pick your favourite and have a Purr-fect time.
So here are a few ideas to scratch the surface of fancy dress costumes for a 60s party, at the end of the day, coming up with an idea may be a lot of work – but it’s all part of the fun!
